With no chain stores and a penchant for bikes and golf carts, Anna Maria Island is a Florida forerunner in beach town sustainability. But when you’re interested in hitting a bed instead of the floor, a few days at the Hilton Pensacola Beach, Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel, or Pensacola Victorian Bed & Breakfast will get you right. Where to stay: If you hang out at Flora-Bama long enough, it could be considered an “overnight stay” of sorts. But aside from the citywide festivals, quirky locals, energetic nightlife, and good-as-hell restaurants-all worth mentioning and worth coming for!-the real draw here is the powdery, snow-white shores and water that glows that specific, magical blue-green you dream of when the words “tropical vacation” come to mind.Įven better, Pensacola perches nimbly on the fence between “party capital” and “peaceful getaway:” With its population of just 50,000, you can usually find a strip of sand devoid of the Floribama Shore-types….all of whom you can alternatively join at world-famous beach bar Flora-Bama, where a wild night is basically guaranteed if you’re down. Situated along the Gulf Coast, Pensacola’s historic streets might conjure similar vibes to cities like New Orleans or even Salem, Massachusetts. Pensacola is like the New Orleans of Florida-with the beach bars to prove it. Where to stay: The Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa has another fine oceanfront bar as well as luxe rooms for crashing later, complete with balconies overlooking the surf. And Waldo’s Restaurant and Bar, at a beachfront hotel built almost entirely of driftwood, is the prime spot for sunset debauchery. Sebastian Inlet, just north of Vero Beach, has what’s arguably Florida’s best and most consistent surf. This is the point along Florida’s east coast where things start to feel properly tropical, with lush foliage tangling around everything. And if there’s one place you won’t look a fool waving a metal detector, it’s here (especially after big storms, when things like coins and jewelry are still found with some regularity).
During a hurricane in 1715, a fleet of treasure-laden Spanish galleons wrecked just offshore from Vero Beach. The whole Treasure Coast moniker isn’t just a marketing tactic along this eastern stretch of Florida.
